60 Minutes with the Canon C300

I was at InFocus last week and Canon was kind enough to let us take out the C300 for an hour and shoot around South Charleston, SC.

I wanted to see how the camera felt on the Glidecam 4000HD handheld with various lenses. We used Canon L – 14mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm.

We also used the Kessler Stealth slider with the Manfrotto 755CX3 tripod and 701 head. This is a super small setup, it’s nice to know you can still use such a big camera on it. At one point we had the 300mm on this setup.

I did some light coloring on the edit with FCP and Magic bullet, but not much.

The last two shots were at the highest ISOs, one at 4000, and the other at 12,400. On the final glidecam shot we were on the 85mm and at f5.6 so I would have enough focal plane to keep the actor in focus. It’s pretty awesome this was lit with the street light and stopped down to 5.6 and still doesn’t have too much grain.

Canon C300 Test Film

This film is a Test of the Canon C300 camera using Canon ef lenses.
We filmed different scenes around Chelsea in London to see how the C300 dealt with the varied conditions offered on a London street.
It was a very windy day so were dealing with sun in & out, a bit of rain and generally the constant changing weather you get on location.
This was our 1st proper opportunity to use the C300 and try out it’s form factor.
It performed very well holding detail in highlights and also shadows where we didn’t expect and because of the quality of the LCD screen and viewfinder it is much easier to operate.
The Camera was set to 1920 x 1080 @ 50m/bs – 25p we used the Normal 3 Gamma curve & Matrix.
I have set Vimeo to play this at 1080P so it may take longer to playback but please comment if you want it back at the standard 720.

Kodak 5230 Film Stock Test

Source:James Neihouse

Here are a couple of takes from a test roll of Kodak 5230 that I shot last week. Both scenes are with the same lighting set up and are at the same exposure, they were shot back to back, I even left the flash frame in to prove it;)

I really like the skin tones and the way the stock falls off in the dark areas. The highlights seem to hold up very well. There is some noise and some blocking induced by the H264 compression for Vimeo. :(

Comments welcome.

SLR Magic HyperPrime 12mm f/1.6 + GH2 Test Video

SLR Magic HyperPrime 12mm f/1.6 Test from Raitank on Vimeo.

Received this amazing lens about a week ago (thanks, Andrew @ SLR Magic).
Incredibly sharp even wide open, and tremendous Bokeh throughout. I really love this lens.

I used it on hacked GH2 with Mr.bkmcwd’s famous Gop3zilla custom firmware Q14+ (176 Mbit). And almost everything shot with f/1.6 to play around with Bokeh.
